One of the most critical factors when installing a new asphalt driveway is temperature. Therefore, it is always a good idea to schedule a new installation when the weather is appropriate. Cooler temperatures mean that the crew has less time to work, compact, and smooth the asphalt. The material needs to be hot or the outcome could be an irregular, bumpy, and uneven driveway. However, the weather is not the only factor.
According to the National Asphalt Pavement Association, “if you are having a 1-1/2 inch lift placed, the air and surface temperatures should be above 70°F. For a 2-inch lift, there is a little more leeway, but the air and surface temperature should be above 40°F.” The wind can also impact the workability of asphalt paving, and every additional 10 mph of wind speed can reduce the time a crew has by up to 10 minutes.
So, the best time of year to install an asphalt driveway begins in spring, when temperatures move above 70°F, and continues until early fall. Nevertheless, the higher the outdoor temperature, the easier things become. The hot weather will mean that the asphalt paving will not harden too quickly and will give the crew enough time to smooth it properly. Additionally, wet conditions can also make installing an asphalt more challenging, as water can absorb into the material and cause it to need more time to set.
